MecSoft Releases RhinoCAM 2016

Irvine, CA, December 8, 2015: MecSoft Corporation, the developer of industry leading CAD/CAM software solutions, has announced the availability of RhinoCAM 2016, the newest version of MecSoft’s integrated CAM solution for the Windows version of Rhinoceros 5.0.

RhinoCAM 2016 includes four CAM modules known as RhinoCAM-MILL, RhinoCAM-TURN, RhinoCAM-NEST, and RhinoCAM-ART, each of which run integrated inside the Windows version of Rhinoceros 5 CAD program and can be bought and licensed independent of each other. All CAM modules were significantly enhanced and improved in this 2016 release to provide customers with a powerful and complete manufacturing platform.

MecSoft Announces CAM Access for Onshape Users

Irvine, CA, November 30, 2015: MecSoft Corporation announces the release of VisualIMPORT for Onshape. VisualIMPORT for Onshape allows access to the users’ on-line Onshape account from inside VisualCAD, enabling users to view and import part files from their Onshape account. Once imported into VisualCAD, users can utilize VisualCAD’s plug-ins such as VisualCAM to create cutter paths for CNC machining (Subtractive Manufacturing) and Visual3DPRINT to make the models amenable for 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing).

MecSoft Releases Rhino3DPRINT 2016

Rhino3DPRINT 2016 is a fully integrated plug-in that runs inside Rhinoceros 5.0 that offers easy and efficient automatic tools for preparing 3D data that could not otherwise be 3D printed.

  • Support Generation for holding up areas that have overhangs

RhinoCAM® at Murchison Made Guitars

Murchison Made Guitars in New Prague, Minnesota uses RhinoCAM® to assist in the product of The Murchison, a 4th generation acoustic guitar design.

In the bridge design (shown in Figure 1 above), holes for positioning pins are first drilled into the bottom using a 2½ axis Deep Drill operation. In the same setup, a 25 foot radius is machined over the holes using a 3 axis Parallel Finishing operation. The part is then manually turned over and positioned on a fixture where the top also receives the same 25 foot radius. The final product is shown in Figure 2.

VisualMILL® for SolidWorks at Solid Terrain Modeling, Inc., Fillmore, CA

Solid Terrain Modeling (STM) manufactures 3-dimensional relief maps similar to Google Earth® but physical pieces that you can touch and feel. These models allow people who have no experience reading engineering plans or topographic maps to have a personal view of an area in a natural way that can be interacted with.

STM’s patented manufacturing process replicates the GIS satellite digital data of geographic terrain and turns it into physical 3D models. They designed and built their own CNC machines that directly read the geospatial elevation data and then cuts the terrain surface into a block of material.

STM also designed and built custom 7 axis CNC 3D inkjet printers that “fly” the inkjet heads right over the surface of the terrain model and prints high resolution imagery directly onto the physical 3D model. The results are astounding and a very accurate representation of the data.

STM uses VisualMILL® for SolidWorks to assist in them with additional manufacturing operations such as mounting and routing for accessories like brackets, fiber optics, LEDs and other physical display components. The company also uses VisualMILL for other projects including prototype cutting of airfoils for aerospace applications and UAVs or unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

VisualMILL® at MAS Automation Systems

MAS Automation Systems uses VisualMILL to machine components for its Sherloc™ Pressure Testing Work Cell (shown in Figure 1) that is compliant with Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, DOT P173.28.  The pressure testing work cells developed by MAS have performed over 300,000 test cycles in the field without one chemical spill. Click the image below to watch their video presentation.

VisualCAM® for Geomagic Brings Racing History to Life!

Jim Piazza of Cupertino, CA is member of the Bay Area Engine Modelers Club. Jim uses VisualCAM® for Geomagic 2015 in this ¼ scale replica of the side plate breather for the Offenhauser engine. Shown in Figure 1 below, each fin was sliced in a layer to obtain the profile for the tool path.

Figure 2 below shows the completed plate with the breather stacks and caps. All the parts were machined using VisualCAM® for Geomagic Design 2015.

About the Offenhauser Engine from the Justice Brother’s Museum

According to Ed Justice Jr., whose Justice Brother’s Museum houses a dozen Offenhauser engines,

“No story of the incredible Offenhauser engine should go without mentioning the amazing backstory that got us to its place in history.”

“The road to the creation of the Offenhauser engine started literally at the earliest days of automotive development when three French drivers/engineers convinced Peugeot to build a twin-cam engine of their design.” adds Justice.

All three engineers, Paolo Zuccarelli, Jules Goux and Georges Boillot were 27 years old when they presented the idea to Peugeot. Goux is better known as the 1913 Indy 500 winner. Their design featured two overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, a departure from the typical racing engines of the day that relied on bigger displacement for power.

“During World War 1, parts for a Peugeot engine could not be acquired from France for the 1914 season. The engine was taken to Harry Miller’s shop for service and was cared for by Miller’s machine shop supervisor, Fred Offenhauser,” says Justice. “Miller and Offenhauser saw many benefits in the Peugeot design which later served as the basis of the Miller racing engine. The Miller engine later evolved into the famed Offenhauser engine which owes much inspiration from the early Peugeot Grand Prix racing engines.”
