Horizonal Roughing Question

Post by bradyaero »

Hi,

I am cutting out a 3D part from a block. The part is the exact width and length of the block.

I use generate stock from part and all is good.

When the roughing pass simulates, the bit tries to cut down the sides of the part.

I just want rhinocam to carve the top surface and not the sides, is there any way to make that happen.

(reason why is because my tool is not long enough to cut sides without interferance)

Thanks, Greg

Greg,

You can set a limit on how deep the cutter can go. Use the "Bottom" check box to define the deepest cut you want your cutter to make.

You can also keep the cutter from touching the sides at all by drawing a rectangle that is the exact size of the block (height doesn't matter), and select that as a region with the machining operation. The centerline of the cutter will not go outside the region, so it will not touch the sides of the part.

You can adjust the rectangle size to limit more or less your toolpath. Many machining ops can be limited with closed curves as regions.
