2 1/2 axis facing missing section

Postby 1350519287 » Fri Sep 14, 2018 5:51 pm

I've been struggling with this for a while. I've indirectly solved it by profiling but I don't understand why the 2 1/2 axis facing misses one section.

The part is a custom heat sink. The idea is to clamp the raw block in the vise and then mill the bottom finishing with a base outline that will let me grab it when I flip the part over. I'm also not sure how to rough out the rest of the bottom so that I have clear access to the edges when I do turn it over to do the initial facing and pocketing before I use a slitting saw to cut the slots.

There is not enough room for the cutter for the section that is missing the toolpath. You can use 2 axis roughing instead of facing to program this entire area. The stock extents is automatically taken into consideration and the control geometry you select are treated as part boundaries. You can use the cut levels tab set the bottom cut level.

Thank you. However I'm puzzled. I would have thought the Roughing Pass would consider that there wasn't enough space and the Facing Pass, which I assumed was for final finishing would not have an issue.

Is there a simple set of rules or suggestions as to when to use what?

I have a new problem related to this only in that it showed up after I downloaded Heatsink-Rev1.1-MSFT.zip and loaded the part. Now it doesn't matter what part I load in AlibreCAM, the checkbox dialog no longer shows up when I chose say profiling. The large dialog opens to the left. I click on select flat area regions button. The large dialog is hidden and the checkbox dialog is supposed to show up.
It doesn't.
It does on my other system.
What do I have to do to fix this?

You can refer to Overview of Machining Operations in AlibreCAM MILL online help to learn about each operation type. This can be accessed by selecting Help icon located on the top right corner of the Machining Browser or from any of the dialogs in the MILL module.

Please use the following steps to fix the issue if the selection prompt does not appear in your screen in AlibreCAM 2018.
1. Close Alibre Design and download Reset_AC_Selection_Dialog.zip.
2. Go to the folder where you downloaded the .zip file, right click on it select extract all.
3. After you extract the compressed zip folder, select Reset_AC_Selection_Dialog.reg right mouse button click and choose Merge.
5. Click Yes when prompted by windows user account control.
Open Alibre Design and load AlibreCAM 2018.

Thank you. That fixed it.
It also repaired the 'Regions' feature which would cause a complete failure of AlibreCAM.

But, not sure if anyone has noticed but if I open a simple part, then select AlibreCAM MILL. Next select a region as per the 2014 Regions Tutorial and then the usual box stock, select region, tool, cut levels etc. I can simulate. But if I close AlibreCAM by clicking on the 'x' top right hand corner, I should get a dialog that tells me the file has been modified and do I want to save. Instead it closes and all changes are lost. That's just wrong.
