Cutting part with 4th axis perpendicular to its edges

Post by 1385420460 »

Hi,

I am just starting to learn 4 axis cnc machining and am exploring its capabilities. I am looking to use the 4th axis to rotate a part as I cut around an object.

I would normally use 2.5 axis profiling to make the cut but I would like to implement the 4th axis because of the curves in the object. With the 4th axis, I would like to be able to rotate the object so that the cut would always be perpendicular to the edges. Is there a way to do this in RhinoCAM?

If this isn't clear, here is a simplified example of what I want to achieve. Imagine an extruded trapezoid, with two walls angled 10 degrees inward. I would like to be able to trim that shape out of a box by having the cutting bit come from the top and make one pass around the perimeter of the trapezoid. That would require the 4th axis to rotate +/- 10 degrees when cutting the two sides that are angled.

Thanks,
Chris

Could you please upload the part file or email it to [email protected] so we could take a look at it.
