Spiral Machining

Post by KentKeller »

Is there a setting that would help reduce the chatter, and keep a more consistant spacing of the cut when this bowl shape gets near vertical? Changing the stepover seems to change it some but never get rid of it.

Hi Kent,

Unfortunately this is the way Spiral machining will work when the cuts are riding very close to steep walls. This is because the 2D spiral path is projected down and small deviations in the XY plane can cause significant deviations in Z along steep walls. You can use Horizontal Finishing to machine such areas. Another option in the Pro product is the Constant 3D offset method.

I'm not sure if it it would work for you, but in the PRO and Premium Mill versions (wish I had them) there are functions that deal step-over when transitioning from shallow to steep walls.

Thanks to both of you. I am getting by with the horizontal finishing tool.
