Post subject:  RhinoArt Draken Ring

Had a chance to poke around with RhinoArt again :)

The Dragon itself was modelled by Colin Creed in Sculptris and 3DCoat. the Ring was Matrix3d and the floral inlays where RhinoArt.

Workflow (quoted from http://3dcadjewelry.com/forum)

FYI on workflow for the balance here, had a few queries.

Dragon "decimate"

1: Import OBJ :(
2: Drape (with a few extra steps to produce a nice drape)
3: Trim
4: Cageedit.

Ring

1: Curves as per picture from photograph.
2: Scrolly patterns in RhinoArt
3: Ring in Matrix Signet Builder
4: Insets with Matrix Inset Tool
5: ExtractSrf all insets and CreateUvCrv
6: FlowAlongSrf the RhinoArt meshes.
7: Matrix Milligrain Tool.
8: Place Dragon

By far the drape and cageEdit of the dragon took the longest, the rest of the ring was childs play.

Big thanks to Colin :)

Owe you a beer.. oh ya and some $$$$ ;)

customers...

design revision.

Pathing it now.. had to do some very fancy footwork to decimate the mesh enough to not crash with memory errors while pathing...

Was going to do a tut on this pathing but I am having trouble with periodic crashed so decided to do a step by step pictorial instead.

1: Setup huge wax block
Image

2: Check X old fashioned way ;)
Image

3: Run the roughing paths with a 3.17 EM

4: Cut the hole for Brant's arbor.
Image

5: Start indexing path, this one includes all blockers in place and is low res at 0.05mm stepover.
Image

6: Hide the side panel blocker and go in at 0.02 stepover
Image
Image

7: Cut the indexed taper ball areas at about 50 degrees

REPEAT 5-7 at A180

8: Use paint to check that detail is ok before removing from mill.

9:Rotary phase1 , full cut at low res 0.05mm Blockers back in place.

10: which will be followed by three index's at 290 - 0 - 70.

Chris,
great work (like your bathrobe BTW :D ). Let us know what you would like to see in RhinoART to make your job easier. You can send us an email at support@mecsoft.com.

One quick note: It looks like on your roughing paths the clearance plane is a little high. You could save some machining time by lowering it I would think.

Man.. I am OVER midnight cutting lol!

Thanks will do on the rhinoart thing. A quick one would be the abilty to turn the mesh into nurbs via a "drape" method and cap it.

Some overview of the pathing process.
